It is not uncommon to read in many books that marriage will soon be a ceremony of the past. This institution that seemed obvious seems old-fashioned.

Will it soon be swept and the family destroyed? Sometimes we are won by the dizzying feeling of rush towards the abyss. Yet many young people react, confident that marriage stays a privileged place for emotional and spiritual development of a man and a woman. Are they the modern times heroes?

Describing the creation of man, the story of Genesis highlights the divine care. In the first chapter already, the tone becomes solemn when talking about the man: “Let us make man in our image” Gen. 1:26. But in chapter 2 the Creator is tender and paternal: “It is not good that the man should be alone” (v. 18). No animal is able to maintain a personal relationship with him, heart to heart, mind to mind.  Then God said: “I will make him an help meet for him.” This radiant initiative gives to the marriage a divine foundation.

The word “help” is ambiguous. Experts note that it comes from a verb meaning “wrap to hold it all”. The man discovers that he needs the woman to be accomplished. In other words, men and women are complementary and normally essential to each other. The text allows to add that they form two parts of a same being.

Adam seems to have carried in him the first male aspect and female aspect (1:27). Thanks to a deep sleep, God separated these two sides. The word “rib” in Hebrew allows this interpretation. The “man (ish) is now in the presence of the woman (isha). She is similar to him. By a joyous exclamation, he recognizes now the one who is bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh, his wife.

Still the divine order has to be respected! Marriage is the association of two people, not just the sexual union in one flesh. Marriage creates a new person, one couple where each individual, complementing the other, is concerned with the happiness of the other one (1 Cor. 7: 3-7). Sexuality is undoubtedly only one aspect of the unity of two beings whom God calls to complement each other in mutual love.

The Christian couple has a missionary duty, which is to be a living witness of the divine election.

Marriage is carried by converted love which  instead of being self-combustion in the selfish gratification of desires is self-giving.

Have an inspiring day on earth! ?
